Chapter Twenty-Four
Dris
âI canât believe you met the legendary Ice Queen of Lunnaya Skala.â My hands covered my open mouth. After Rune had whisked Sapphira away, we didnât see her until the morning when she joined us for breakfast. Mates needed time to bond after long separations, so we understood it. We all sat in the gardens with a feast of a breakfast while Sapphira shared the details about her journey. Emrys played with Lucky while I fought the desire to ink her story to paper. Sheâd visited three kingdoms that Crysia had lost touch with twenty years ago.
âShe was everything you think an Ice Queen would be, and her top guards are all women. So badass,â Sapphira gushed, then nibbled on some strawberries. Sheâd changed so much since I had last seen her . . . not only from the babe in her belly, but her hair styled in the signature Lunnayian locs of the guards and her demeanor. No longer a lost human or growing princess, she sat with the confidence of a queen. She had fought through her situation, pressed on, and gained allies along the way.
âThat is one kingdom I did not get to venture into. So cold.â Queen Olyndria feigned a shiver and her mate, who sat beside her, huffed. Theyâd been happy to sit with us younger folk and relish in the happy reunion.
âBut Asil Tas always had the best fashion,â Nyx chimed in.
Iâd seen these places in the books of the library but never in person. Now I wanted to see them with my own big eyes. Emrys would join me, of course. The opportunity for him to cause mischief would be too great to ignore.
âThatâs cool and all but, I would have sold my essence to see fatherâs face when you cracked the throne roomâs floor. He must have been so pissed.â Tor laughed and Rune smirked, his hand squeezing Sapphiraâs shoulder. There hadnât been a foot between them since they had come down from her room. Sapphira giggled with Tor and nodded.
âHe sucks, but your mom is nice. She somehow convinced the twins at Asil Tas to join us before I arrived.â The princess reached her hand over to Runeâs knee and squeezed twice. The flirtation between those two mates had everyone attempting to revert their gazes more than a few times.
âYou made Crysia proud. Allies will help us greatly when Verin comes. My sources show he has thousands at his command, waiting and growing in the badlands. He will have convinced the Dramens to join him after the defeat at Crystoria. You will make a great queen, my daughter.â
Sapphira smiled at her mom and lifted one of the diamond tea cups for a toast. âIâm glad to be home. I love you all.â Tears rolled down her uplifted cheeks. We enjoyed sharing the smiles and laughter . . . Sapphira was safe. We desperately needed a moment like this. Everything seemed to move so quickly that weâve barely had a break to breathe.
